Fire Island Lava from Kilauea Volcano streams over the cliffs at the West Kaili’ili ocean entry in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, west of Kalapana, in December, 2011. This photograph was taken before dawn, from a boat offshore of the firefalls. It took very unusual conditions to produce this photograph: a relatively calm ocean; extremely vigorous lava tube activity, but with little steam produced, and just the right amount and direction of wind, so that the lava was not hidden behind a cloud of steam, a clear sky, and an expert boat operator, unafraid to steer the vessel in close to the boiling inferno and hold it still for photos. The “magic moment” when the ambient skylight perfectly compliments the amount of light emitted by the molten rock is even more evanescent than the lava falls themselves, which start and stop constantly with no notice. It took many attempts, and a good measure of luck to be in the right place at the right time to capture this image.
