The Tabora Gallery Kokua was born out of an urgent and compassionate response to the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Witnessing the widespread destruction, loss of life, and profound impact on the affected communities, Roy Tabora and Anne Wood felt compelled to channel their creativity and resources toward making a difference.

As the years have passed, the Tabora Gallery Kokua has continued to honor its roots in disaster relief while broadening its scope to support various organizations or specific needs of those needing relief. Nevertheless, the spirit of compassion and solidarity that emerged in response to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami remains a fundamental part of the organization’s identity, reminding us of the profound capacity to bring people together in times of adversity.

On August 8, 2023, a historic town was lost as wildfires mercilessly rushed through and destroyed Lahaina. The town is gone, the fire destroyed everything taking our homes, restaurants, stores, schools, businesses, and galleries. We are blessed that our people are safe.

We are grateful and touched by so many of your calls wanting to help our employees (Ohana) navigate through this time. The fire has taken their sense of security and stability. It has taken their livelihood, homes, cars, art studios, and basic necessities. Your help is welcomed as we join forces to provide our Ohana and the community of Lahaina with support and the resources they need to rebuild their lives.

We have come up with 3 ways to help support the Lahaina community and our Ohana during this time.
