Winged Procession This image depicts the rare phenomenon of chain feeding by reef manta rays. As they swim in procession through a tidally-aggregated mass of plankton, each manta benefits from the vortices created by the manta in front of it, as well as the avoidance response of the plankton, which may jump up in front of one manta and into the mouth of the following animal. The chain loops back on itself at both ends (mantas can be seen traveling in the opposite direction below). I took this photograph while breath-hold diving at Hanifaru Bay in the Maldives (Indian Ocean) – one of very few locations where this behavior occurs with some regularity
