Steam Machine Lava from Kilauea Volcano flowing at a temperature of 2000°F (1100°C) empties from a lava tube into the Pacific Ocean at the Kamokuna ocean entry in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Kamokuna entry began on the morning of July 26, 2016, when the “61G” lava flow, originating from Pu’u O’o, reached the ocean after more than three years without an ocean entry. The flow built up a substantial shelf or bench of lava rock, adding 26 acres of new rock to the coastline of Hawaii Island. On New Year’s Eve, 2016, the entire bench collapsed into the sea, taking part of the sea cliff with it, and opening up a gusher or “fire hose” of lava shooting from high on the cliff dropping 60-70 feet into the ocean, causing violent steam explosions that blasted hot pumice high into the air. The USGS estimated that this lava tube was emptying 1-2 million gallons of hot lava per hour directly into the ocean during Jan-Feb, 2017. This picture was taken in late January, 2017, from a boat, showing the lava pouring into the ocean. The firehose ended later that month. In May, 2018 a new eruption began in the east rift zone and diverted away the lava that had been feeding the 61G flow.
